Menthol cigarettes and RYO (roll-your-own tobacco) banned in all EU.
From May 20, 2020, an EU law bans the sale of menthol cigarettes including cigarettes with menthol capsules and RYO in Denmark and in the rest of the EU including Duty Free located in the EU region. Therefore, menthol cigarettes (with or without capsules) and RYO are removed from the range of all tobacco companies and will no longer be on the shelves of kiosks and stores that sell cigarettes.
When will menthol cigarettes be banned?
Until 11.59 p.m. on May 19, 2020, you can still buy menthol cigarettes including cigarettes with capsules and RYO (roll-your-own tobacco). From midnight on May 20, 2020, all sales of these products will be prohibited. If you are a smoker and still have a pack of menthol cigarettes (with or without capsules) or RYO (roll-your-own tobacco), it is still legal to smoke them after May 20, 2020.
What about other cigarettes?
The ban is only on menthol cigarettes (with or without capsules) and RYO (roll-your-own tobacco) and does not include conventional cigarettes without these characterising flavours.
Which menthol products will be banned?
The EU ban on characteristic flavors, in this case menthol in force as of May 20, 2020, only applies to cigarettes (with or without capsules) and RYO (roll-your-own tobacco), which means that other products such as heat-not-burn products (i.e. tobacco sticks used with IQOS), e-cigarettes, all white nicotine pouches, cigars and menthol flavored chewing tobacco will not be affected by the ban.
What about tobacco sticks used with IQOS?
Tobacco sticks used with IQOS, which heats the tobacco instead of burning it, are not affected by the ban. All flavors, including menthol, stays in tobacco sticks used with IQOS after May 20, 2020. So, with IQOS you can continue to enjoy the taste of real tobacco.
