Menthol cigarettes ban – what does that mean for you?

This spring, the EU ban on flavored cigarettes comes into effect. This means, among other things, that you can no longer buy menthol cigarettes. You must now make a choice. You can choose to quit smoking altogether, which is an ideal alternative. Or you can choose one of the alternative tobacco products that are allowed to retain the menthol flavor.

At 11:59 PM on May 19th 2020, sales of menthol cigarettes in Denmark will end. This is because the EU has chosen to ban the sale of cigarettes with a taste of anything other than tobacco – such as menthol. The ban applies throughout the EU. This is one of the several initiatives that regulatory bodies in the EU are taking which they believe will reduce smoking initiation especially among young people.

The new ban includes tobacco for smoking – that is, cigarettes and roll-your-own. This means that in the future you can still use, for example, e-cigarettes and tobacco sticks with menthol flavor, which are used with IQOS. Read more about the ban on menthol cigarettes.

Philip Morris has a vision of a smoke-free future. IQOS, used with tobacco sticks, is our innovative alternative to regular smoking. The tobacco is heated rather than burned, as it does in ordinary cigarettes. By heating the tobacco instead of burning it, you get the true taste of real tobacco, without fire, without ash and with less odor. Two kinds of tobacco sticks with menthol flavor already exist today.
This website has information about smoke-free products and are only for adults in Denmark, who would otherwise continue to smoke or use nicotine products.
